Lived Experts

This website was designed by a Lived Expert Consultant group.

A Lived Expert Consultant is someone who has gone through different systems, especially the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). This person has experienced foster care, becoming a parent, and having their children taken to dependency court. Because of their personal experiences, they can build trust and help parents who are going through similar situations. A Lived Expert Consultant’s job is not only to support these parents but also to teach them how to handle DCFS and avoid future problems. Teaching parents to avoid repeat issues is an important part of their role.

Why Lived Experts Are Important:

The website is made to help parents where they are right now so it is important that it is made by people who have gone through these tough experiences themselves. We tried to include the voices of parents and children who have faced the stress of a DCFS investigation and know what advice they needed during that time. The website is here for parents who have questions, need support, or want to learn how to be better parents.

This work is for my children and their children, nobody is immune. Having lived experience I put my hand out to other parents because nobody should have to face this time in their life alone.

- Pari Lucero, Lived Expert Consultant

As a lived expert and the younger brother of a sister who entered the foster care system at birth, I witnessed firsthand the numerous challenges my grandmother faced while trying to regain custody. At that time, information was scarce, and navigating the system was incredibly difficult. After many years of legal battles, she finally succeeded, but I am certain the process could have been smoother and quicker if she had access to the comprehensive information and resources now available on this site. This personal experience motivated me to contribute to the development of this website. I believe it will serve as a vital informational hub for families and parents facing the daunting prospect of potentially losing their children to the system. This website has the potential to prevent family separations and support those navigating these challenging circumstances.
